The student-run Spring Fling carnival has been an annual event for 44 years, including a decade spent at Rillito Park. The student-run carnival is expected to attract 32, attendees during its three-day run.
This year's carnival features more than 40 rides, games and food booths. Spring Fling continues Saturday from 11 a.
UA CatCard-holders, military personnel and children 7 and under are free. Folks enjoyed the carnival experience at Spring Fling at Rillito Downs in The next year it moved back to the UA campus, and drew few complaints from neighbors. With a history dating to , the carnival gives students who produce the event a lot to live up to. Spring Fling came from humble beginnings on Bear Down Field as a one-day fundraiser, but it has grown into the largest student-run carnival in the country.
There will no shortage of delicious fair food, from funnel cakes to nachos, zucchini fries to corn dogs, kettle corn to fried Oreos — all provided by student clubs at the University of Arizona. Each year, the carnival leadership changes, allowing for fresh ideas and energy.
It's unlike anything else. This year's sustainability highlights include a free bike valet location, with support from the UA Cycling Club; education and outreach, informing Spring Fling participants about how to engage in sustainability initiatives; composting and recycling, to include tableware items; and the recycling of cooking oils and grease through GreCycle , a local company that converts such materials into biodiesel to help power CatTran shuttles and other vehicles.
Since the Spring Fling team began recycling and composting in , more than 3, pounds of compost has been created and more than 21, pounds of material has been recycled. The team also reports that the event diverted from landfills 57 percent of total waste, through its composting and recycling efforts.
