What do spirit shards do in runescape

The only people who would actually miss it - were it to be removed - are the people for whom it's a very unhealthy pass-time and they needed an intervention anyway.

Not the above commenter. But as I understand, the duel arena is a very big money sink because jagex taxes your winnings. The other 2m goes to jagex. Money sinks are important to reduce the power creep effect. And I think the point im trying to make as well is that it affects a lot more than just trading over max shards. Like I said in my post, it's just not intuitive to newer players to use spirit shards.

I know some people will say it's a rich persons problem but this is really a problem starting with above max cash, not just max shards.

I'm aware, but still, this has been requested so many times on RS3 and it'd actually make sense. Idk why they don't add it while the OSRS team gladly did.

I totally support adding platinum tokens, but I could see there being an additional issue with incorporating coins vs. Obviously not too difficult to figure out but it could make it slightly more difficult than implementing it in OSRS.

Let's not kid ourselves people. Jagex was happy to add something similar to platinum tokens. Players however were not happy that it didn't come with GE functionality. Makes good sense, but maybe it'd be fine to request it as a package anyway. Could be it just wouldn't be expanded ever otherwise, like in osrs example.

There isnt a real need in osrs to trade items for over max cash in the ge at the moment as only items that have been over max cash have been release day very rare items like master clue 3rd age and scythes. I think the easy counter-argument to those players, is that none of the items where you'd need platinum tokens are traded on the GE to begin with. If you can buy rares via ge, prices will probably start to fall back to something reasonable because it isnt hard to buy out an item at 2.

After the majority of those people are gone, a tax would be pretty good. Before anyone misunderstands, a tax would only hurt legit players that try to stake, as x-ers rwters mainly, idk a single legit person that does an x would just decrease their stake to account for the tax. Tax is good because if 2 players bet 1b each, let's eyeball it at 0.

Completely agree I just think handling the rwters would do a lot more immediate good because you know jagex will release only one and then the other much later. Not directly. To make an extreme example just to clarify how it works, say you have gp, and someone is trying to stake 1m. So you go in again. Now you have 1m and gp.

Permabanning RWTers at al kharid all the way down the line of their mains, mules, alt farms and bot farms would be the largest gold sink in the game. I'm on board with doing something about the bots, but I'm not sure I understand the argument that there's more benefit to be gained in prioritizing one over the other. Its like an income tax that only affects the lower class.

Forgive me but isn't that the entire point of the tax? The tax is great. What you fail to understand is that it will be completely avoided by x-ers, so the tax will only be for legit players and not the rwters.

You go up to an x-er in 2 timeframes. In the first timeframe that has no tax, you stake someone and put up 1b and they put up m. Pretty standard. If you win, you get m, if you lose, the x-er gets m, only putting up m, so they still profit while you only get m if you win, risking 1b. I do understand that. Please don't put words in my mouth simply because we disagree. Ignoring the problem the dueling tax helps address, which is not xlogging, doesn't make it go away.

A separate solution is needed to fix the xlogging problem and failing to implement this change does not help solve it. Arguably the issue getting worse by way of dueling tax changes may even make it easier to argue for resources on the dev side to work on the problem.

Though I'll totally admit, that's a big if. It's like the 'criminals can still get guns' argument and it's every bit as unconvincing. Sorry I dont pay attention to the duel arena much but why on earth would anyone willingly take an unequal stake like that to begin with?

So they have the upper hand for high stakes, and so when you go to the arena and want to do a 5B stake, there is a very small chance someone else will be doing a 5B stake, so you go to an x-er to stake. Winnings the combined total of both players' stakes are now taxed by a percentage depending on the size of the stake. Actually a much better idea would be to impose a trade limit on staking itself. All stakes have to be completely fair and even.

No more x-ing, which means no more consistent money for rwters, and also a tax would be a lot more smooth if both trades were fair. I have like wins and losses at casino in osrs and never heard of xers. What is this? Sorry for my lack of knowledge. Xing is the act of only giving a percentage of what the other person is staking. This means the person calling the stake only puts up In the long run xers will always come out on top assuming they have unlimited capital which rwters essentially do.

Because when you've been trying to find a stake for 3 hours and no one is calling you, you get kind of tired of typing:. They dont want a fair stake they want money, and people use x'ers to stake because sometimes there just aren't any options.

When you go on crazy losing streaks and you have a gambling addiction you'll do anything to make sure that next stake is as massive as possible. Exactly yea. The price you pay accepting their lower stake is for convenience. You can find a fair stake in a few hours, or just walk up to an x-er and stake on the spot. They typically don't try to scam. Sometimes it takes stake offers to find someone who isn't trying to scam with a runic staff, or rune pouch. Almost as if there was a global pandemic and our mods are on mimnum wage so have no incentive to work hard.

Ironic that osrs has much less need for platinum tokens than rs3 does, yet rs3 doesn't have platinum tokens. What kind of jagex logic is this. I didn't read the other replies, but platinum or another currency multiplier should be usable in grand exchange buy offers to shut up the damn manipulators when items go over max stack. Yes please. People talk about them being used on the GE and I've posited the idea of a miniature Rare Exchange that only sells rares and only takes tokens but honestly we need them now.

Let any GE integration come later. The underlying problem is not that items are so expensive we need platinum tokens. The issue is certain items have been so grossly inflated in value through manipulation. I'd rather the price fixing were dealt with instead. The only thing Platinum Tokens would do is allow the top 0. I'm with this, imagine they added platinum tokens. Couple months time we'll be getting "add a new currency because partyhats are max tokens". HSR recently went beyond max cash, all the hero items are over.

Look at offhand blight bound people are paying 1. Slowly treading near max cash, will they go over max cash? Depending on their specs theyll easily reach max cash. Greater rico is only m of max cash which is scary, i should've worded it better saying lots of items are near max cash. Idk people seem to think max cash is a lot but it really isnt. Range wep prices have much more to do with range buffs than inflation though, id expect the prices to fall from here. It would only be borderline impossible if the code base is a horror show.

A truly professional development staff could increase the maximum gold stack from a signed bit value to a signed bit value with a couple weeks to plan, a week to code, and a month to test. I dunno. I feel like spirit shards are fine. For items over max, just trade with other rares included. Besides, maybe a cap on value isn't a bad thing. Adding platinum just makes the rich richer, and does very little to help the actual economic problems plaguing the game's low and mid income levels.

The rich are getting richer without any secondary currency. We have trillionaires in the duel arena and merchants making billions every day in the current market. But it's unrealistic to think that people with items over max just shouldn't sell for cash.

People will always want cash and the reality is spirit shards technically work but its not a good solution long term. People want cash. And if there's no way to get it anymore, from having maxed out amounts, then there's no more purpose. The mega rich would have to do something else besides just horde wealth.

Even adding platinum is only a temporary repair, and not even for very long. Let's say Platinum trades at gold, you could still just bet that, or buy in huge amounts, the same thing people do now, but with bigger numbers. Give it a couple years, and the same problem occurs again. Why bother kicking the can, when the mega-rich can just suffer now, and not get to make themselves richer for no good reason?

Well people with max cash or max shards just make alts or store it in partyyhats to store wealth. It's not like once they reach max they are blocked from having more currency. People with money find ways to keep building it. And you're right that maybe isn't enough. And maybe for RS3 we need a higher exchange rate, but I think the principle still stands. I see your point, I hadn't considered alts. But I still think Platinum just kicks the can down the road, so I don't think it's a great solution.

But tbh, there's not much that really does work well either. Any exchange medium is gonna get maxed out. Maybe that's just something that is fine, the rares market is just cosmetics, after all. I made a post yesterday asking to atleast add a spirit shard trader to GE to make it easier when buying things above max cash.

This NPC should hold an infinite amount of shards to help that issue too. Adding a spirit shard trader would be a bad aid solution until we get platinum tokens which are a bandaid solution for the max integer issue. Seems like were a long way away from a real solution. Except adding the currency doesnt change anything.

Its not like you cant have multiple max shard stacks already. You come off so condescending yet you are completely wrong and oblivious to the fact that platinum tokens wouldnt increase inflation.

Thats not how it works. With platinum tokens or whatever, the prices will just keep going up. Without them, there is a chance they'll eventually stop rising.

So yes, technically you are correct. Anybody with enough raw cash for this to be an issue is horribly mismanaging their bils. Why help such a tiny, and very privileged, group of players? If they've got the bils without the acumen to keep them invested then it is my opinion that devoting dev time to hand holding such players is a mistake. It is something that offers meaningful change to very very few people. And all of those people are rich idiots. If you think the amount of players with max cash is "tiny" then idk what to tell you.

Anyone can get a third age dye from a clue and have to trade with spirit shards. Its not exclusive to the top. Anyone that wants a rare needs spirit shards. Anyone pvmer that wants to buy a full ecb needs spirit shards. Truth is keeping your worth in anything with a stagnant, or depreciating, value is a mistake. So shards and coins are both bad choices for storing amassed wealth.

Edit: discussing 1 max cash stack in a thread talking about an alternate allowing us to go above and beyond a shard stack is all kinds of pointless and absurd. None, its a low effort strawman. I maintain that handholding the ridiculously wealthy is a mistake from a developer pov. You liking to risk the stock market with your GP does not mean other people are dumb for not doing it.

That's how we ended up with spirit shards being used in the first place. People don't want to travel to some archaeologist in the game to exchange currency, they should be able to do it at any banker. At that point why not make revenant artifacts buyable from mandrith? Again, at that point just do platinum tokens. It would be more effective and probably less work.

Well platinum tokens are currently 1 : 1k in OSRS. Which already means a max stack of platinum tokens is what, 2. That's the only reason why I say it may be a little excessive. But there's also no reason to think Jagex couldn't make platinum tokens more expensive in RS3, so it doesn't mean it has to be k like OSRS. And is my understanding of first age coins wrong? Because looking at the wiki, it's an alchable from geodes that has a death value of 1. It is untradable, unstackable, and cannot be bought sold through and NPC.

The only resemblance is the word "coin" in its name. Having platinum tokens exist in OSRS and RS3 as currency with different static values could lead to people being scammed. Runescape's economy is already so inflated that one order of magnitude will only help for so long though, in the mean time, it's helpful.

Would 1m "token" be bigger than it needs to be? Yes, but I don't see a problem with it. If an item is worth thousands of mil, rounding to the nearest 1m is a twentieth of a percent. Is relegating exchange of it to NPCs off in random corners of the map a good idea? I don't think it is, but I don't think every banker should have them lying around is great either. Grand exchange clerks would make sense to me, or they could add an NPC who's job is to trade in them to each GE like the decanter etc , maybe have one at PoF, one at the Duel Arena, and other high-currency locations.

I thought Platinum Tokens was 10k. Regardless if you are making them more expensive, you might as well just use First Age Coins instead. Platinum Tokens lorewise would come out of nowhere. It of course would require a few changes, but that should be easier than adding Platinum Tokens. You ok my dude? They item currently doesn't have any use other than being able to be alched for 1m. Players also complained that familiars were not very useful. Jagex initially countered that the price of shards and the number needed for each pouch type was carefully considered and meant to balance the true worth of the summoned familiar.

However, in the face of continuing complaints - and possibly as economic changes resulting from the game modifications interrupting Real-World Trading and Unbalanced Trade became apparent - Jagex made several changes trying to address the concerns of players regarding the Summoning skill.

In the Summoning Changes update of the 17 January just two days after Summoning was released , they decreased the shard price from 50 to 25 coins each. Until September , spirit shards were a "junk" item that were rarely bought for 25 coins each.

Players often sold spirit shards for 20 coins or lower each, plus junk, on the forums. It was also possible to buy pouches and swap to Bogrog to obtain shards cheaper than 25 coins each without junk. For example, a granite lobster pouch worth about coins on the Grand Exchange gave shards coins at 25 each , which is under Originally, spirit shards could not be traded on the Grand Exchange, but in September , Jagex made it so players can buy spirit shards on the Grand Exchange , with a median price of 25 coins, and a buy limit of 10, per four hours.

In September , Jagex removed the infinite stock of spirit shards from the shops, instead giving them a personalized stock of 65, Many players complained that this was too low of a stock, especially combined with the "Buy" instead of "Buy-X". In response, Jagex created Spirit shards packs , effectively returning infinite stock of Spirit shards. An option to sell spirit shards to pet store owners such as the one in Yanille was also added.

Spirit shards may be used to replace money due to their guaranteed buy and sell price of 25 coins each. This is useful for players who have over the cash limit of 2,,, coins. It is also used for players who are trading for items that are worth more than the maximum cash. An ogre, called Bogrog , has the ability to exchange shards for completed pouches.

Bogrog is at the obelisk and Summoning shop near the entrance to the ogre city of Gu'Tanoth. However, players need minimum Summoning levels, which begin at 21 and increases for higher summoning pouches. For example, a spirit terrorbird pouch requires level 52 Summoning and 12 spirit shards to make. Trading it to Bogrog requires level 58 Summoning, and yields 9 spirit shards in return. Players with access to Prifddinas may prefer to use Lord Amlodd who will exchange pouches on the same terms as Bogrog.
