This setup enables a further level of control over the metric that's used for the local routes. For example, it's possible to enable the Automatic Metric feature to configure the routes that are assigned to the network interface. And at the same time you can manually configure the metric that's assigned to the default gateways. If a metric is specified at the network interface level, but a gateway is added and configured for the Automatic Metric feature, the gateway can inherit the metric that is assigned to the network interface.
For example, if you assign a metric of five at the network interface level, and then you add a gateway and leave the Automatic Metric feature checked for the gateway, the gateway is also assigned a metric of five.
For half-duplex interfaces, such as wireless, the effective speed is half of the advertised speed. The Automatic Metric feature is different from the Dead Gateway Detection feature that can force the network to switch the default gateways that are based on Transmission Control Protocol TCP retransmissions.

The Metric field indicates the cost of a route.
If multiple routes exist to a given destination network ID, the metric is used to decide which route is to be taken. The route with the lowest metric is the preferred route. Some routing algorithms only store a single route to any Network ID in the routing table even when multiple routes exist. In this case, the metric is used by the router to decide which route to store in the routing table. A measure of time that is required for the packet to reach the network ID.
Delay is used to indicate the speed of the path—local area networks LAN links have a low delay, wide area network WAN links have a high delay—or a congested condition of a path. The effective amount of data that can be sent along the path per second. Throughput is not necessarily a reflection of the bit rate of the link, as a very busy Ethernet link may have a lower throughput than an unutilized Kbps WAN link.
A measure of the path constancy. Some types of links are more prone to link failures than others. For example, with WAN links, leased lines are more reliable than dial-up lines. Source Routing Tables. Sign up to join this community.

How Route Metric value is calculated by different Routing Protocols? OSPF uses a reference bandwith of Mbps to calculate the cost value.
